Dear KDEers,

I recently reported a bug with KFM under Solaris2.5.1/AFS, reported on the
buglist, with the snapshots from 6th April 98. I've installed snapshots
from today 14th April 98 and have the same problem. I've discovered what
provokes it, and it's most sneaky and curious (I hesitate to add amusing,
it took me yonks to find). The problem is with tricky bookmarks, but it
expresses itself in a most nasty and un-bookmark-like way:

CASE 1: I link a single folder in the bookmarks to a folders in
my home directory. The subdirectories and links (WWWurls) which are in my
subfolders are displayed nicely by the bookmarks popup, in other KFM
folders, and are selectable. On logging out & restarting, KFM does the
following weird things:

	- hundreds of QFile file not found messages
	- Generates dozens of kioslave processes.
	- Gives message boxes requesting the generation of the
$HOME/Desktop, share/mimelnk and many other things.
	- Puts following in .kde/share/apps/kfm/desktop:

	 	/root/Desktop/Trash;0;0
		/root/Desktop/Templates;0;1
		/root/Desktop/Autostart;0;2

(good trick; I'll never be root under AFS)

	- Crashes with a message

"Could not create socket Error constructing PF_UNIX domain server socket"

CASE 2: I introduce MANY links from the bookmarks folder to my
home directory folders (within the bookmarks editor). After a few
are added KFM generates many kioslaves, and no longer displays
any bookmarks (or subfolders) in the other KFM windows.

CASE 3: I remove .kde/share/apps/kfm/bookmarks with a link to $HOME. Same
trouble as above. Kioslaves without end.

None of this happens on restarting KFM if I delete the links within my
bookmarks folder first (most peculiar) !

Sure, I can avoid these troubles by using the bookmarks folder as
intended. However, I should be able to do what I'm attempting, namely keep
my bookmarks as kdelnks in the actual folders themselves, rather than
trying to maintain separate (yet identical) bookmark folder structures.
Until a solution is found I can still maintain my system by adding links
using "add bookmark" and dragging the link into a regular folder from the
bookmarks editor (i.e. KFM bookmarks folder). I can then use KFM to move
through the folders and select the desired bookmark instead of the (more
convenient) pop-up bookmark menu. Until the bookmark bugis fixed I can
live with this much slower approach.

Any ideas on what's causing the problem ? There are no recursions in the
folders to which I link. Maybe it's just an AFS problem, maybe not. I
don't have access to Linux, so it might help the developers if someone
tries to reproduce the bug under Linux. Just put a few soft links in your
bookmarks folder to large file folders (containing some WWWURl.kdelnks)
and see whether KFM screams.

Darren

PS: I am really enjoying this strategy for maintaining many links to very
varied projects, and recommend it to anyone who has to juggle many varied
and quickly-changing projects. I found it impossible to maintain
correspondence between my projects and related links using netscape's
bookmark folders exploiting a single .html bookmark file.
