I haven't noticed the problem you mentioned.
I have:
    Beta 3 - precompiled.  
    AX4.1 X-Server   
    P100.  IDE disks.  I do have lots 'O ram.  ( 72M )
    
How are you for memory - do you have "enough"
Or are you already swapping by the time your wm is loading..?
Just some thoughts.
