I went ahead and took the plung...

I got the latest tgz distributions:
kdeapps
kdebase
kdelibs
kdesupport
&
qt-devel 1.21 [rpm installation fine]

I untared the set into /usr/src/kde and make a /usr/local/kde directory.

Secondly, I exported the two required PATH statements:
export KDEDIR=/usr/local/kde
export PATH=$PATH:KDEDIR/bin

so now I cd'd into kdesupport and did the "./configure" where it all
seemed to look fine.  Next, of course, I ran "make" and found this
error:

Making all in giflib23
+ cd giflib23
+ make all
make: *** No rules to make target 'all'.  Stop
+ exit 1
make: [all-recursive] - Error 1
make: [all-recursive-am] - Error 1

Well, as you can see I didn't get very far.  Can anybody offer any
suggestion on how to fix this.  Thanks-
