A blinking outline around the icon it was launched from would be one
option, and very easy to put in.  Maybe a little animation in a corner
(near the clock?  There's an awful lot of space in that corner...) if
the program was launched from a menu.  I agree that changing the cursor
is a bad idea.  Even in the case of windows, very non-portable as it
interferes with Applications' ideas of what they want for their _own_
cursor.
