I use something similar:

  /home/gamaral/storage - Actual content ( this is my real home )
  /home/gamaral/usr - User compiled apps
  /home/gamaral/usr/bin - User app bins and scripts
  /home/gamaral/tmp - Symlink to /tmp/gamaral/
  /home/gamaral/etc - Contains symlinks to backup worthy config folders
                     ( .kde, .ssh, .config, etc )

  This way I can just backup what I need and pretty much dump the rest, a
kind of backwards approach to your idea.
