We've been mounting home directories over NFS for many years, on many
clients - not client clients, client servers. Each server involved needs
the same password file, which we distribute via NIS/YP.

We use cpdup, but you can presumably use rsync or other methods. You need
to control which areas and files are copied, of course. We don't run it
automatically: we run it by hand when required. Things that need to be
shared real-time are stored in one place only: they are in a database or
accessed over NFS.
