Thanks - that's useful. You are quite right I got KDE 3.41 as a series
of RPMs from links on the KDE website (>sourceforge I think). So it
will not have been Suse specific. I will have a poke around for SuSe
specific RPMs.

Did this KDE 3.41 come from the Suse updater? Or did you get it elsewhere?
Suse is one of the few distros that has a fully working searchable help
integrated with its own manuals and KDE and man/info pages.
They achieve this by tightly integrating their system with suitable mods so I
suspect that the help will only work correctly with a distribution as
packaged and probably with updates done through their official updater
service.
I suspect you have updated kde differently.
