Personally, I'm forever struggling with audio on Linux.  Between ALSA, 
arts, oss emulation, gstreamer, etc, etc -- I'm thoroughly lost :-(

I've even gone so far as to buy a new sound card, switched distros, 
upgraded kernels... nothing seems to work well ("garbled" sound through 
arts, ALSA can't detect my sound card).

Anyway, you might want to try installing the gstreamer-plugins package to 
make it work in Juk.
