Hello Steve,

If you're using devfs (see if the 'devfsd' process is running), have a read 
of http://hints.nl.linuxfromscratch.org/hints/dsp_devfsd.txt

If you're running with a normal static /dev filesystem (no 'devfsd' running) 
then you'll probably want to have a look at amending 
/etc/security/console.perms to make any permanent changes you require.
