KWord before the upcoming 1.2 didn't have WYSIWYG implemented.
I think you cannot consider "not implemented" as "messed up". 
David Faure had to rebuild most of the text editing parts to get WYSIWYG 
support working and it wasn't possible to achieve that in time of the 
KOffice1.0 release.
