Oh Yeah!  You got one of my pet hates....  And even worse; Every Damn one of 
them then tries to install an agent of some kind to monitor its associations 
and steal them back or else steals them back on running the app. So your 
associations depend on which app you last ran or which tray agent you did or 
did not kill.

Compared to that KDEs system is a godsend and it would work even better if 
people just stuck to the mime-magic inherent in kde and linux and just 
registered apps properly. It is not necessary to use file extensions like in 
windows.
