Likely because you're saying that the encrypted version of your password is
'jobe99', which means whatever you type in to the password field - AFTER it
goes through the hashing process - 'jobe99' will be the answer.  (which is
highly unlikely to ever occur)

Try using the plain-text-password and that should work better for you.

I have created a user ukhant , following is the config

 

user ukhant {

            uid 100;

            class super-user

            authentication {

                encrypted-password jobe99; # SECRET-DATA

            }

 

 

If I try to login following are the message I get in log 

Sep 22 15:28:57   login: LOGIN_PAM_AUTHENTICATION_ERROR: PAM authentication
error for user ukhant

Sep 22 15:28:57   login: LOGIN_FAILED: Login failed for user ukhant from
host
