John,
Another method is to NOT use the navigation bars, but use portlet sets 
instead.  At this point I do not know the specifics, but if you create a 
Top_Nav, Left_Nav, and Bottom_Nav portlet and place them on each PSML. 
The portlet can get the username from rundata and then generate the 
appropriate content.
