Folks;
   
  I'm writing a edit mode for my own file type. I can get the syntax highlighting to \
work and stuff. What I would like to do is also change the background color on some \
of the lines. How can I accomplish that?  
  If that is not possible, how can do this (macros, plugins)?

  Example:
  Say the file has <> character combination. The edit mode can show that is a \
different color. In addition to that, I need to change the background color of that \
line. Similar to how the current line in the edit buffer is shown in a different \
color (but the background color for the <> line should remain whether it is the \
current line or not).
