Thanks for the answer.  

I would vote for leaving the window in place (I think this is the old
behavior) instead of minimizing and maximizing the window in order to bring
it to the front.  Then when the java bug is addressed the 'bring to front'
functionality can be reinstated.

This is a workaround for a Java bug where you cannot bring a window to
the front unless you do this (minimize then maximize). Apart from an
erronous animation, this shouldn't cause any problems.
