Summary: WhiteSpaces plugin not working (2)

Initial Comment:
It seems that WhiteSpaces is not working in all cases.

I have tried:

1. make sure that defaults are not set for whitespaces
2. open a text document
3. from the plugins menu, choose to show space (in whitespaces)

See attached screenshot where the plugins menu is choosen (for the second), spaces is \
selected but not shown in the document.

Setting defaults changes this though.

Follow-up to ID: 2928387.

I'd like to have this fixed as well. Unfortunately, my schedule is clogged
up too much to prepare a patch myself...

Regarding maintenance, I don't mind doing these changes. I also found these
things annoying, but since no one reported a problem, I thought they were
not worth touching.
I'll think of an improved interface which will be simpler for users. If
you like, you are welcome to make these modifications yourself; I think the
original developers of the plugin no longer work on it.

I agree that it isn't very intuitive to operate. Many users have already
trapped into the same problems.

Nevertheless, all works as designed for me:
The Whitespace plugin is working on a per buffer basis. The menu actions
effect only the current buffer while the plugin options are defaults and do
only effect newly opened buffers.

Message:
There are a few problems here, I think. First is that the UI is not
intuitive. It is not at all obvious that you have check "Show spaces" AND
one or more of "Show leading spaces", "Show inner spaces", or "Show
trailing spaces". It would probably be more clear if checking "Show
spaces" also checked the other 3 choices automatically. Or better, just
leave out the "Show spaces" choice altogether. I don't see that it has any
real purpose.

The second is that the plugin options and the menu do not work together.
If I go to the plugin options, check "Show spaces", "Show leading spaces",
"Show inner spaces", and "Show trailing spaces", then click OK, no spaces
are shown in the text area and the menu items for these are still
unchecked. Further, checking items in the menu does not result in the
corresponding items in the plugin options being checked.

The third problem that I'm aware of is that the choices don't take effect
right away. Once I get the right things checked and get the spaces to
display in the text area, I can uncheck all the 'show space' checkboxes,
and the spaces are still showing in the text area. It seems to take some
checking and unchecking of the boxes to get them to go away.

Is anyone actually maintaining this plugin now? It looks like there were
a couple of bug fixes a year or so ago, but no real work on it since 2006.

Message:
The Whitespace plugin distinguishes between "leading", "inner" and
"trailing" spaces, and it lets You decide which of them You want to see.

So, if "Show spaces" is disabled, no spaces are shown, and if "Show
spaces" is enabled, ONLY the checked types of spaces are shown - but You
have checked none...
