Its hard to doanything with somebody watching and criticising all the =
time, isntit now, honey-boy? There doesnt seem to be as much glamour, =
romantically speaking.
Judy was only moderately pleased over the engagement because of =
theprospect of China.
And you know, dearie, even if you cant git a husband theres lots of =
careersopen to gals nowadays.
Im constitutionally fickle and that being the case Im never goingto =
trust my emotions again. He had been thereso long he seemed like one of =
the family.
Mays brothers flicked cigarette ashes all over the house. Whatll be =
coming av it the Good Man Above only knows.
Now she was home again and oh,it was good! Long Alecs not taking off his =
boots afore he goes to bed.
Pat turned her head and looked at her sisterlying in her lithe young =
slimness on the hay.
For thefirst time in her life she was a shirker. The young scallywag did =
be killedthe nixt wake in the very same way hed writ av .
Afar off the evening hills were drawing purple hoodsabout them.
And then athought darted quite unbidden into her mind. It was going to =
be a night of frost and silver. Pat loved to think of all her staunch =
old flowers under the banksof snow, waiting for spring.
And I justtold them I was engaged to Brook.
You know, Pat, nothing is ever quite so dreadful in reality as =
inanticipation.
At times adjustmentseemed almost impossible.
Pat was not worrying over the absence of the men.
They watched himout of sight but did not attach much importance to his =
going.
And in the meantime, said Pat passionately, life will beunlivable at =
Silver Bush . Its a kind of race, you know, and men enjoy that everso =
much more than a tame courtship.
We must talk it over because we have to face the situation, Pat. What a =
delightful smell the apple orchard had in September! Pat groped out a =
hand, found Raes and squeezed it.
Gintleman Tom was niver one to cry overspilt milk, was he now?
It was outrageous that a cat should be so blatantlyhappy. But afar the =
Hill of the Mist waslovely in the September sunshine. Were not to be =
married tillhes through college so well have lots of time to get =
acquainted.
As for Judy and Tillytuck, theyseemed stricken dumb.
