NoMachine makes/invented NX, but they recently released the core libraries 
under the GPL (love it!).  You can find out more about FreeNX here:

Essentially FreeNX is like RDP or VNC but much, much faster (and no 
obvious/bad compression artifacts).  They say you can get desktop-like speeds 
over a 56k dialup link.  However, I've only tested it with my 384k cable 
connection.

For reference, the 384k connection *is* desktop speed for the most part =)

Also, since it is GPL it is constantly improving and it can only get better.
