I had this _exact_same_error_ after upgrading 7.2 -> 7.3 on one specific
system (other upgraded systems were fine). I found that some of my RPMs
for X didn't upgrade from 4.1.0 -> 4.2.0.  Not good.

So I manually RPM upgraded about everything I could find for 4.2.0 on
the CD, including non-X font stuff. No go. I tried running mkfontdir
and other tools in the font directories, no go. I messed with xfs'
config, no go.

I eventually just went over to another system that had a clean 7.3
install and tarballed up "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts" and extracted to the
problem system. I restarted xfs and bam!, it worked.

Seems like there might be an incorrect font list/config in one of the
font directories. Don't know. And it only happened on one upgrade,
others were fine.

P.S. BTW, until I figured out what the "issue" was, I pointed the
system to use another system's xfs so my user could get to work. You
can do that with X. Just change the "unix/:7100" to
"tcp/systemname:7100". Of course, you must make sure "systemname"'s xfs
accepts external requests by commenting out the line "no-listen = tcp"
in its "/etc/X11/fs/config" file (and restart its xfs service).
