Actually, I wasn't asking in the context of using it for a Catalog.  I just
wanted to know more about DataLists.  I think I'll build my catalog using
the standard dc context.

Actually, these values are not really stored directly in either context.
  japple loads/caches them.

 There are certain interfaces into japple to get values from these
datalists.

The real problem is that DataLists usually contain simple values
(strings, numbers....) I'm not sure how you might use them for the whole
product catalog.

DataLists use languages.... so in your product catalog.... you could
have a query that retrieves the following values....
Product Category , Product Name, Product Number, Price

These values can become languages in a DataList.  These values can then
be used to drive select boxes in the browser.

As I said before though, if your product catelog is complex....DataLists
won't do the job.
