Thats a +.
But there is HTTP communication going behind the scenes too.
So even if the XMPP client is an HTTP browser, the XMPP server need to
be HTTP server to, to get the confirmation from your OpenID server.

Yes, you are absolutely right.
OpenID was designed for WWW and is bound to HTTP domain.
