temas mentioned there are problems with Jabber-1.4.2 and pth-1.4.1, so I
suggest you un-install pth-1.4.1, and  use the pth-1.4.0 that comes with
jabber-1.4.2 (the current tarball)

# tar -tzvf jabber-1.4.2.tar.gz | grep "pth-1.4.0/$"
drwxrwsr-x jer/jer           0 Feb 11 19:12 2002
jabber-1.4.2/jabberd/pth-1.4.0/
