Is it feasible to configure tunnels between the border routers of
upstream and downstream domains ?
Either GRE or mpls would allow you to pass traffic between border
routers without forcing any intermediate routers to understand BGP
routing.

You can have both upstream and downstream border routers inject a
default and expect it to work if you are providing transit between then
if you have non-BGP speakers in the middle.

But maybe i'm missing the question completly. A ascii art diagram of
what you are trying to achieve would probably help you out a great deal
in terms of getting a an answer to your question.

regards,
  Pedro.
