Thanks for the reply.  We have 3 IP data centers, and will soon have connections in each POP.  I've been trying to wrap my mind around how to make everything work if the intra-pop links break, and this looks like a winner.

I used to work for UUNET/WCOM, all the countries are set up as
confederations under a given AS for that region, works really well, but
as a given confederation gets bigger you still end up having the same
(n-1)2 issues. In the end it depends on how big your confederation iBGP
meshes are going to be and wether you are using MPLS, Cisco recommend
using route-reflectors in an MPLS backbone.

the typing, I've clicked through and read the first few dozen links.
