Information technology companies once relied on anti-virus software
and consultancies to protect themselves from malicious hacker attacks.
But now, US companies are set to form an industry self-help group to
provide early warning of online assaults.

The group, known as an "information sharing mechanism," will enable
high technology companies to share data anonymously about software
vulnerabilities and systems attacks. The mechanism, to be launched in
the next few months, may even give participants access to classified
government information.

The concept has won ready support from lawmakers, as well as the
industry. Politicians have been calling for public and private sector
collaboration on computer security issues, adding to calls by
President Bill Clinton in a 1998 directive.

The information sharing system, developed by members of the
Information Technology Association of America, would almost certainly
have helped prevent the "distributed denial of service attacks" (DDOS)
which crippled well known websites in February, said Harris Miller,
president of the association.

The network is similar to an existing system run by the financial
sector to protect trading systems and money transfer networks. The
telecommunications industry also runs an advance warning centre to
share information on potential attacks against infrastructure.
