[Moderator: Two articles on this because of the big difference
in the amount stolen. The other concern that has come up is that
the two men were sentenced to death over hacking charges. From
what I have read, they have been sentenced to death over the bank
robbery charges. Hacking was just the means of the theft.]

China sentences hackers to death for bank theft
December 28, 1998

SHANGHAI, China (Reuters) -- Two hackers who broke into a bank computer
network and stole 260,000 yuan (31,400) have been sentenced to death by a
court in eastern China, the official Wenhui Daily said on Monday.

The Yangzhou Intermediate Court in Jiangsu province also conficated 40,000
yuan from Hao Jinglong, formerly an accountant at the Zhenjiang branch of
the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, and his brother Hao Jingwen,
the newspaper said.

The two opened 16 accounts under various names in a branch of the bank in
September and later broke into the branch to install a controlling device
in a bank computer terminal, the newspaper said.

They used the device to electronically wire 720,000 yuan in non-existent
deposits into the bank accounts. Afterwards, they successfully withdrew
260,000 yuan from eight different branches of the bank, the newspaper
said.

All the money had since been recovered, the newspaper said, without giving
further details.

SHANGHAI, China (December 28, 1998 11:23 a.m. EST
http://www.nandotimes.com) - A Chinese court has sentenced twin brothers
to death for hacking into a bank's computer system and stealing 720,000
yuan - 86,700 dollars - the official Wenhui Daily said Monday.

It marked the country's first case of bank robbery through a remote
device, the report said.

In handing down the sentence on December 24, an intermediate court judge
in eastern Yangzhou city called for courts to take a "tough stance"
against the expected coming wave of high-tech crime.

Hao Jingrong, an employee at an Industrial and Commercial Bank of China
branch in Zhenjiang city, secretly connected a homemade modem to the
bank's computer before business hours on September 22.

Hours later, his brother, Hao Jingwen, used a personal computer he had set
up in a specially rented apartment in Yangzhou to dial into the bank
system and transfer the funds.

The restaurant owner deposited the funds in 16 accounts the brothers had
earlier opened under false names.

Before they were caught, they withdrew a total of 260,000 yuan.

It was not clear what led police to the twin hackers.

The sentence included an 40,000 yuan in fines, although the report said
police recovered all the stolen funds.
