Novell updates security suite

Continuing a fast-paced effort to get products out the door, networking
software maker Novell delivered a test version of its security software
suite to a limited number of customers, with final shipment of the update
due by the end of the year.

The Orem, Utah-based software firm has extended its core efforts so that
new types of functions can take advantage of its Novell Directory
Services--what the company hopes will be a primary driver for developers.

Thus, Novell's combination of caching, firewall, authentication, and
secure private networking, known as BorderManager, continues to be a prime
focus as an example of what a central administration point on a network,
namely Novell Directory Services, can do for applications that run on top
of it. A directory essentially provides a central database for a host of
information on users, systems, software, and network devices.

As an example, the combination of services now features a single sign-on
component so that a user can easily log-in, whether they are setting up a
secure connection from within a corporation, across the Net, or through a
secure "extranet" link.

Novell executives believe their bundled approach to security, called
BorderManager Enterprise Edition 3.0 in its latest incarnation, has been
validated by the shopping spree underway in the security software market,
exemplified by the variety of acquisitions made by Network Associates.

Services in the suite include: a firewall, virtual private network
support, a caching mechanism, and authentication of users. Besides the new
single sign-on feature, Novell has added the ability to create an access
control mechanism by user, so that one department within a corporation can
be sealed off from another, if necessary.

Novell said a new installation component allows a BorderManager server to
be installed in 15 minutes.

The test process follows the recent high-profile launch of an upgrade to
the company's flagship NetWare operating system, the first version to
support IP, the standard transmission protocol for the Net.

Each copy of BorderManager comes with a two-user license for both NetWare
4.11 and 5.0. Pricing for the updated suite was not announced.
