NETWORK ASSOCIATES SELECTED TO DEVELOP NEW INTERNET SECURITY STANDARD

                        (PR Newswire; 08/25/98)

Work With Internet Software Consortium, IETF Will Add Security to Domain

Name System

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Network Associates, Inc.
(Nasdaq: NETA) announced today that its advanced research arm, TIS Labs,
has been awarded a development contract to add security to one of the
fundamental protocols of the Internet. The $1.4 million contract, awarded
by the Department of Defense's Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA),
calls for Network Associates to create a new generation of the DNS system.
This contract will be performed in concert with the Internet Software
Consortium.

The announcement of the new security features comes during the national
conference of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), the official

standards body of the Internet. The IETF meets to develop and revise
evolving standards such as the Domain Name System (DNS), which is used by
all computers on the Internet to translate between host names and numeric
Internet addresses.

NAI's TIS Labs work will create a new generation of the standard by
adding data authentication and integrity to the DNS system, which
currently has severe security flaws.

"NAI's TIS Labs team continues to play a significant role in the area of
advanced security research," said Fred Baker, Chairman of the IETF. "This
announcement gives them yet another opportunity to support the open
standards process and provide security for one of the fundamental
protocols of the Internet."

Prior to this project, NAI's TIS Labs had been awarded contracts to
provide expertise in the specification of the DNS security (DNSSEC)
standards and implemented prototype DNSSEC servers. This contract to work
with the Internet Software Consortium, which provides the BIND product to
DNS servers around the world, is the culmination of years of advanced
research in this area.

David Conrad, President of the Internet Software Consortium, commented,
"The Internet Software Consortium sees a secure naming system as one of
the

fundamental technologies necessary for the deployment of widespread
electronic commerce. As such, ISC is extremely pleased to be working with
NAI in the implementation of security enhancements for ISC's BIND
nameserver software to insure the integrity of the Domain Name System."

"This is an exciting opportunity that highlights TIS Labs' ability to come
up with solutions to very complex security problems," said Terry Benzel,
Director of Advanced Security Research for NAI's TIS Labs. "We are
thrilled that our researchers were able to take this project all the way
-- from theory to implementation to distribution of product. This type of
technology transfer -- from government-funded research to the marketplace
-- is exactly what we hope for when we win a research contract."
