Or if you prefer another file you can run ipmon in foreground mode and
redirect to a specific file, since it generates a lot of output if you
log heavily. I generally send ipmon's output to /var/log/ipf.log or
somesuch.

ipf (the app) in and of itself creates and modifies filtering rulesets,
etc... ipmon is the application that watches /dev/ipl to give you useful
log data. Check the ipmon man page for usage.
