Basically one uses bastioned / armored proxies for this. If the proxies
are robust against "any" attack, this will enhance security. If you
simply use a standard proxy (e.g. sendmail) with "default"
configuration, that will make the firewall less secure.

Because of this I currently am writing security-proxies / application
level gateways for a firewall  (http://www.wyae.de/secure_gateway/) -
but there currently is not much code to speak of. I guess around autumn
I will be able to publish the first 0.1 alpha code for HTTP and SMTP...
