It appears a complete python rewrite of Nagios known as Shinken has taken
place. I got track of this in LINUX Pro this month explains the Nagios
developers had slowed their updates. This had frustrated some involved and
they took the route of doing a new open source product. See...
http://www.shinken-monitoring.org/
Shinken monitors systems in a network locally or remotely and is
multi-platform.
These days routers and firewalls are taking on more tasks. Just look at the
many IPCop add-ons. Firewalls are now being converged with other needed
office services in a single box. This is not a new idea as I suggested this
in this form last year; or was it the year before?
eBox <http://www.ebox-technologies.com/>, a good example, is not only a
firewall but has a Ubuntu distribution as a base. It was just reviewed with
others in the June Linux Format. eBox says it is a "...Network Gateway,
Unified Threat Manager, Office Server, Infrastructure Manager, Unified
Communications Server...". Quite a list.
How about an extreme idea. Virtualization could isolate a firewall VM from
an office services VM inside a single box. The office part could do phones,
backups, controlled network access, proxy access to cloud applications just
to name three.
Something to consider.
Cheers.
