That really should not matter.
Everyone could install from 486 to amd64 if the chipset is supported by the
kernel (could be less the case for amd64, the only time I try it work for
me)

So that suggest that the problem is not in scsi detection but just after.
This is 'cdrom' detection code.
Is it a SiS chipset (what is the chipset brand and reference)?

There is a 'dma' option tweak for SiS chipset. I am unsure it is necessery
as the bug covered by this workaround should have been fixed in the kernel.

Is your system properly configured (harddisk on first controller, cdrom on
second controller)?
Did you preset IDE type on bios or let autodetection work?
