G'day Joel, and everyone else who has been helpful,

I've not had enough spare time to work on this properly, and for now the
kids are connected and working in the orange subnet.
This eases my paranoia, and they can catch whatever they want from the
internet.

Using QoS to slow down the messenger data would probably not stop them, just
make them whinge more about my slow connection speed (128k ISDN), but I
don't think that any of the IM apps would use a lot of bandwidth when they
are just typing/chat anyway.

Hacking the registry on their PC's to stop messenger working would be ok,
but they can easily bring home a different client from school and install
that, and away they go.

I still think that the only possible way to block this IM traffic completely
is by using some type of Layer 7 filtering, and will one day get back to
trying out the Layer7Block. When I do I'll let the list know how I go.

Thanks all,
Col
