For those that are interested in a good read, this pdf document covers
freeswan (now openswan) in excellent detail explaining all of the
complications of IPSec tunnels.

It also explains why you cannot do many of the things that have been asked
to do on this list.

The first two chapters in particular cover all the ins and outs, while the
last couple of chapters focus on the project that this was written for.
