Thanks everyone for the comments.
I had almost decided to follow Tom's advice and bin the Speedtouch
modem, but then I read Eric's comments, and I tried again.
According to the manual my modem seems to be version 4 release 3.0.1.
From the manual it also appears that the earlier version was
coloured red, and the one before that blue. Mine is coloured
silver. Anyhow, I followed Eric's instructions to the letter and
once again there errors.
I then looked at the red log, as instructed by Gilles, but I regret
to
say that it means nothing to me. At the risk of annoying some
people - and I apologise if I have made this note too long - I append
the red log below. If the log provides any clues I would appreciate
advice about what to try next.
Thanks again.
Brian
