That's a great idea.
As a workaround it should be possible to copy your workspaces.lua file to 
saved.lua once, and than execute a shell function in a lua-script which 
copies static.lua over workspaces.lua, and then call ion:restart().

I may try to implement this sometime (and post it to the mailinglist), but I 
should convert my beloved goto_or_run() and complete_history() functions to 
ion3, which has a much higher priority so that I can finally use Ion3.
