To avoid confusion, please note that the problem disappeared
when I updated the kernel module (intermezzo) with the version
contained in intersync.0.9.5... (apparently kernel module in
kernel 2.4.18 is still incompatible with intersync.0.9.5)

So I conclude that I had the wrong answer,
as mount -t intermezzo /dev/sda6 /exports/server
now works fine (for me).
