Summary:

On a two machine intermezzo system with
both lan and private network connections,
an intersync connection through a switch
on the local lan works, but a direct
crossed cat 5 intersync connection
crashes the client intersync process.
Why does the private network connection
fail?

Details:

I have two machines with a 2.4.18 kernel,
intermezzo-0.9.4, and two ethernet cards
each. There is a direct crossed cat 5 wire
connecting one pair of cards (server0 and client0, 192.168.1.*).
The second pair is connected to a switch which
uplinks to the local ethernet (server1 and client1 131.158.*).
I do the following with a clean, empty ext3 sda4:

This works (so far):

[root@server1 /]# mount -t intermezzo /dev/sda4 /izo0
[root@client1 /]# mount -t intermezzo /dev/sda4 /izo0
[root@server1 /]# intersync --debug 31 /izo0 | tee /root/intersync.log
[root@client1 /]# intersync --debug 31 --server="server1" /izo0 | tee
/root/intersync.log
[root@server1 /]# mkdir /izo0/var
[root@server1 /]# cp -a /var/www /izo0/var

This private network version
crashes the client intersync process after
a few hundred KB. The only difference here
is that I set --server="server0":

[root@server1 /]# mount -t intermezzo /dev/sda4 /izo0
[root@client1 /]# mount -t intermezzo /dev/sda4 /izo0
[root@server1 /]# intersync --debug 31 /izo0 | tee /root/intersync.log
[root@client1 /]# intersync --debug 31 --server="server0" /izo0 | tee
/root/intersync.log
[root@server1 /]# mkdir /izo0/var
[root@server1 /]# cp -a /var/www /izo0/var

Why does this fail, and how can the private wire
be used to maintain synchronization?

Robert Williams
