You might be interested in LogSentry/Logcheck:

http://www.gnu.org/directory/sysadmin/monitor/LogSentry.html

It basically monitors whichever log files you tell it to, and remembers
how much of the log file it has already seen.

You could run it via cron every 5 minutes or whatever, and you can
add exclusion strings that you don't wish to have reported to you.
