Hi Raja,
If you are mainly interested in DICOM then you could simply
use GDCM directly:
http://www.creatis.insa-lyon.fr/Public/Gdcm/
The ITK DICOM reader is based on GDCM.
Similarly, the ITK TIFF reader is built upon the tiff library.
