We've looked at it ourselves. In fact, we had Microsoft give us a
two-day training session on it. The Microsoft stuff, which they call
MOF, is actually pretty good. One variable they add in MOF, which isn't
in the original ITIL, is the people factor.

The one problem with all of these sorts of things is that everybody,
from management on down, needs to buy into it. If there are hold-outs,
they'll be the ones that kill any successful attempt at it. I think MS
had two courses, one intensive session for staff (which I attended), and
one more high-level course for management. I found it worthwhile, but it
became clear that a few groups that NEEDED to attend would never go for
it, and would never take training in it (especially the MS training--can
you say "mainframe high priests"? I knew you could).

www.itil.org (apparently hosted by the company that developed it)
describes
it as "the de-facto global standard in the area of service management"
and
"a systematic, professional approach to managing IT services". Hmmmmm.
