Thanks for the tip. The required file is 

libpython2.4-devel-2.4-5mdk.i586.rpm

It is not on the download version CDs of Mandriva LE 2005 but can be 
downloaded from rpmfind.

The imgSeek 8.5 installed without a hitch and is running fine.
