If imapd did not respond to a normal kill (SIGTERM) interrupt it is likely
that it was in so-called "critical" code, meaning that it was in the
middle of updating the mailbox.  That isn't supposed to block.

It would therefore be very interesting to know what it was that that
process was doing, such as a stack trace.

It is conventional on UNIX to override any .lock file which is more than 5
minutes old.  If procmail had done that, the procmail hanging problem
probably would not have happened.

(imap-2002e) is on:
	ftp://ftp.cac.washington.edu/mail/imap.tar.Z
and a release candidate version of imap-2004 is on:
	ftp://ftp.cac.washington.edu/mail/imap-2004.RC.tar.Z
