Apologies for jumping in late into this thread.

There is a command "alternatives" which can be used to set and switch
between various java (or for that matter any application) of different
 versions.

I had to fight with this command to set the system for developers who
develop apps across versions of Java, PHP, Python -- Common scenario
for those who develop apps in Centos 4.x/5.x .
