I couldn't ssh into my work machine last night, despite having done
so on Saturday.
auth.log has the following:
May 30 20:10:01 wivenhoe sshd[12050]: warning: /etc/hosts.deny, line 15: can't verify \
hostname: getaddrinfo(123-456-163-187.bas003.bmt.esat.net, AF_INET) failed
Is this a DNS problem, an sshd config problem or a tcpwrappers
problem? I can resolve the IP number to the hostname but not the
reverse:
brendan@wivenhoe:~$ nslookup 212.2.163.187
Note: nslookup is deprecated and may be removed from future releases.
Consider using the `dig' or `host' programs instead. Run nslookup with
the `-sil[ent]' option to prevent this message from appearing.
Server: 136.201.1.3
Address: 136.201.1.3#53
Non-authoritative answer:
187.163.2.212.in-addr.arpa name = 212-2-163-187.bas003.bmt.esat.net.
Authoritative answers can be found from:
163.2.212.IN-ADDR.ARPA nameserver = auth02.ns.esat.net.
163.2.212.IN-ADDR.ARPA nameserver = sec02.ns.esat.net.
auth02.ns.esat.net internet address = 193.95.142.60
auth02.ns.esat.net has AAAA address 2001:7c8:3:2::5
sec02.ns.esat.net internet address = 192.111.39.112
sec02.ns.esat.net has AAAA address 2001:7c8:2:a::2
brendan@wivenhoe:~$ nslookup 212-2-163-187.bas003.bmt.esat.net
Note: nslookup is deprecated and may be removed from future releases.
Consider using the `dig' or `host' programs instead. Run nslookup with
the `-sil[ent]' option to prevent this message from appearing.
Server: 136.201.1.3
Address: 136.201.1.3#53
** server can't find 212-2-163-187.bas003.bmt.esat.net: NXDOMAIN
/etc/hosts.deny has
"ALL: PARANOID"
as its only relevant content.
