For historic reasons I use a composite locale, setting some of the
LC_* variables along with LANG to a mix of "C" and "C.UTF-8".

I noticed that "ptree -g" didn't use the UTF-8 box drawing characters
despite the fact that I was using a UTF-8-capable locale, and decided
to fix ptree to use the documented API to retrieve the charset of the
current locale rather than guessing the charset from the locale name.
