Please can you review the following change?

Marco has taken the commit from Nexenta that Gordon mentioned in the issue =
and
gone through and modernised it and cleaned up some things along the way, and
then tested it, including on a system which already uses netgroups from LDA=
P.
Along the way, we realised that nscd does not cache netgroups, but I opened
a new issue for that.
