It turns out to be a known problem, called motorboating.  The solution 
is to flash the firmware with the latest version: problem solved.  For 
reasons that appear not well understood, it does not appear immediately 
but develops over a short period of time.  The Windows installer ran 
just fine on wine, which saved having to massage the OSX installer I got 
off Sourceforge.

Looks like you shouldn't have tossed the modem.  Bummer.
