Hi Jeff,
>As far as I understood, Multi-Tech uses a few different chipsets in there
modems.
You are correct, the ZDX are based on Rockwell (Conexant) chipsets.
>And they will honor their Warranty on ALL Modems, even if it means
replacing it with a newer Modem with a Newer Chipset. What's wrong with
that?
The problem is that if you replace a product with a different chipset then
it won't necessarily be compatible or 'better'. For instance, if you
replaced an Agere based ZBA with an Rockwell based ZDX you'd lose V.34 Super
G3 and have a product that's a lot less robust for faxing.
>Multi-Tech is a big company, they are closing their doors just because one
chipset they are using is nearing the EOL.
You miss the point here... no modem company is large enough to influence the
chipset manufacturers. Fax in particular is very niche and low volume
(relatively), which is one of the reasons why so few win/lin-modems have
active fax software development taking place.
My point is that a 10 year warranty sounds great.... but what's it REALLY
worth ?
