Perhaps something like this:

        telnet $PROXY $PROXYPORT
        Trying $IP...
        Connected to $PROXY.
        Escape character is '^]'.
        GET http://www.some.where.com/ HTTP/1.0
        Host: www.some.where.com
        <type an empty line here>
        <look at the header lines of the output>

The proxy may insert a header line to identify itself.
